Ishmael Beah is a Sierra Leonean author and human rights activist, born on November 23, 1980, in Mattru Jong, Sierra Leone. He is best known for his memoir, “A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier,” which tells the story of his experiences as a child soldier during the Sierra Leone Civil War. After being orphaned and forced to flee his village at the age of 12, Beah was recruited into the government army and spent several years fighting in the war before being rescued by UNICEF and eventually immigrating to the United States. Beah has since become a prominent advocate for human rights and has worked with numerous organizations, including UNICEF and Human Rights Watch. He has also written several other books, including “Radiance of Tomorrow” and “Little Family.”
